Pharmacy Interns of NY started this petition to CVS Pharmacy

Overview: CVS Pharmacy in the NYC region rewarded technicians with a substantial ≈$3 pay increase in July 2018, but remain silent regarding the pharmacy intern compensation for months. Rather than the monetary amount, this petition is to address the injustice and lack of respect CVS Corporate is expressing towards their pharmacy interns.

Background: In the NYC region, CVS Pharmacy made a corporate decision to increase all pharmacy technician and cashier pay rates to approximately $14/hr. While this increase greatly benefited technicians, the pharmacy interns at CVS Pharmacy were not included in this raise, and subsequently, most P1-P3 interns actually had lower pay rates than newly hired technicians.

Four months after this change, the pharmacy interns of CVS Pharmacy finally received our annual intern pay raise. This increase is supposed to reflect a "competitive pay that coordinates with your year in pharmacy school," according to the Sr. Director, Pharmacist Talent Acquisition at CVS Health. However, the actual pay increase we've received clearly does not reflect any value CVS Pharmacy has for their pharmacy interns.

While the rates different slightly for each store, most CVS interns in the region are receiving less or a few cents more than newly hired technicians.

Rather than the monetary amount, this petition is to address the injustice and lack of respect CVS Corporate is expressing towards their pharmacy interns.

As pharmacy interns of NY state, we have the specific responsibilities of:

  1. Using the clinical knowledge we've gained in our years of pharmacy school to counsel patients on their medications and provide the best recommendations for OTC products to ensure safe medication use and patient satisfaction
  2. Collaborating with patients, providers, and third-parties to adjust drug therapies to improve patient outcomes
  3. Communicating directly with doctor's offices and other pharmacies to take verbal prescriptions and transfers
  4. Safely compounding and reconstituting medications
  5. ...amongst many more.

While some of these tasks can be completed by technicians in other states, in NYS, these are just a few of the many responsibilities that only RPh's and licensed pharmacy interns are allowed to perform. On top of carrying out all the daily tasks technicians perform, pharmacy interns are also expected to execute all these additional tasks and much more at an even higher rate of performance—for we have the goal of ultimately becoming the best pharmacists we can be for the company.

In the past, pharmacy interns rates used to be several dollars greater than entering-technician pay, and increased $1+ depending on the professional year of pharmacy school the intern is in. However, upon finally receiving our annual raise, it is a minuscule amount which values us at less, or insignificantly (a few cents) more than completely new, untrained technicians. This shows that as a company, CVS Corporate does not care about the additional efforts and dedication pharmacy interns put in for the company.

Please sign this petition to show CVS that we, pharmacy interns, deserve to be respected for our efforts and commitment to our roles.

DISCLAIMER: This petition is not in any way trying to undermine the efforts of pharmacy technicians, but rather just to advocate for pharmacy interns and help vocalize our desire to be valued for our efforts as well.
