We, the undersigned residential neighbors around the Westgate West shopping center, are AGAINST the proposed Tenancy of Goodwill Industries Inc to sub-lease/occupy this space from former occupants CVS, located at 5285 Prospect Rd in San Jose, CA 95129.
We are concerned with the overall blight, noise, increase in traffic, illegal and after hours dumping, rummaging through donations and overall tidiness of the back side of the shopping center this type of business will bring.
Goodwill store hours are 7 days a week with long hours of operation. M-Sat 9AM-9PM and Sun 9AM to 8PM. Neighbors who live directly across the street will be forced to deal with all the traffic and noise related activities that Goodwill's parking lot operation use model will bring. Proximity of residential neighbors to the back side of the shopping center is less than 150ft. Truck and trailer loading/unloading, coordination of donation drop-offs, sorting, employee activity, cleaning and accumulation of donations as well as debris, categorized as non-sellable refuge accumulating outside of the premises pending disposal.
There is already a Goodwill thrift store in Campbell, 3 miles from this proposed site, offering services and items for those that support Goodwill. Another Goodwill store in Santa Clara and yet another in San Jose on Winchester. Overall there are 14 Goodwill stores in the South Bay Area (see attached map). We really don't need another Goodwill store in the area, especially this area!
We have witnessed firsthand the illegal dumping and scavenging of after hours drop offs with the current Goodwill trailer located on the property behind Trader Joes already. We already have numerous complaints filed with property management and SJPD related to vagrancy and rummaging of dumpsters of current businesses. Enforcement is non-existent. Any promise of Goodwill addressing these issues is not applicable or justifiable without enforcement. We do not want this business in our neighborhood. We feel this space can be more beneficial to the neighborhood with a business that this community will support and patronize.
CVS is bound by a long-term lease agreement and has no interest other than sub-leasing to anyone who will pay the rent. We plan on following through with all efforts to block this business from establishing a foothold in this location.
