Joslyn Muniz started this petition to Dr. Alex Johnson Cuyahoga Community College

Students who anticipate to graduate this fall have dedicated months and even years of their lives to successfully completing their certifications and degrees. The biggest struggles of starting college are the finances, having the motivation to go to class, learning to teach yourself from an online class, finding childcare, making sure you have transportation, and a continuous dedication to successfully complete. Due to COVID-19, Cuyahoga Community College will not be having an in-person graduation ceremony for the fall class of 2020. Many students have sacrificed so much for their education to better themselves, their lives, and careers and that alone takes so much will power. It is so much easier not to worry about the struggles of going to college than it is to simply not go, so the students who continuously are sacrificing time and money, dealing with the common struggles of college, and are at times under stress deserve to be recognized properly.

On top of the common struggles that college students face, the Corona Virus Pandemic has added to that. If students wanted to continue their education, they had to quickly adapt to online learning. This means, students are spending even more hours studying and completing assignments since they are learning from a distance and have limited time and/or contact with professors. Many students are also hands on or visual learners which makes it harder for them to learn online thus adding to the common struggles of a college student. Although the college and professors have tried their best to accommodate students, it is very discouraging to not have an in person graduation ceremony for those who are successfully completing their certifications and degrees this semester.

There is a way to have an in person graduation commencement ceremony and still practice social distancing safely. The college should at least allow students to attend the ceremony while broadcasting it live for guests who are not able to come. If it is possible, at least 2 guests should be able to join the student at the ceremony. Students and guests can be seated at least 6 feet away from each other and all persons attending must wear a mask; students should be able to receive or purchase a Cuyahoga Community College face mask that will match their cap and gown.

In conclusion, the class of 2020 have worked hard for this; the students WANT and DESERVE an in person graduation commencement ceremony and it can happen! It’s not too late to make it happen!!
