Foodbank needed at Curtin University

Did you know... 1 in 7 Australian university students are food insecure? Meaning they do not have regular access to safe, affordable and nutritious food on a regular basis. Students who are food insecure have been shown to have poorer overall health and have a higher prevalence of chronic health conditions.

The results from a survey conducted on the Curtin University campus reports that over 21% of those students had resorted to eating a smaller meal than they needed due to a lack of food. 12% of students reported they did not have access to food due to financial limitations. Yet only 2% of students had accessed a charitable organisation such as Foodbank to access discounted food.

Currently the availability to emergency relief food at Curtin University is sourced via Foodbank and is funded by the Curtin Guild. The food provided is limited to availability and is provided only in an emergency situation. The current Foodbank/Food pantry on campus only has the funding and resources to assist a handful of students a semester.

We believe that Curtin University should allocate more funding and resources to the provision of an established Foodbank on campus. We feel this would help to alleviate the issues associated with food insecurity in Curtin University students.
