Saint James School was founded on the principle of inspiring students to become “leaders for good in the world,” a mission which implores us to stay true to our moral creed in the face of discrimination. In light of recent tragedies, including, but not limited to, the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, a group of Saint James Alumni have drafted a letter calling Saint James School to rise up to the standard it has promoted for almost 200 years. Black students and students of color have contributed generously to the mission of the school, through participation and excellence in the school's athletics, arts, and academic programs. All the while, these same students endured a culture of unpunished instances of racism and xenophobia that have impacted their otherwise positive and transformative SJS experiences. We call on Saint James to enact policy changes that ensure a nurturing and supportive future for Black students and students of color. Their experiences matter. We are at a critical point in American history in which our silence, if maintained, will be heard for generations to come. It is our moral duty to speak out against discrimination and enact change to reverse it so that we can educate the next generation to avoid its perpetuation and recurrence. The time for silence and inaction is over, and ought never to have begun. Please sign this petition in support of the policy changes suggested by Saint James Alumni in the letter below:
