Regina Maghirang was a freshman at CUNY Hunter in Fall of 2014. Shortly before beginning her exciting academic career at Hunter, she was sexually assaulted. Due to the tremendous amount of suffering and aftermath of the incident, Regina also suffered academically. CUNY Hunter denied her enrollment for this upcoming semester, (Fall 2015) even after her therapist who is a licensed professional submitted an appeal.
Her therapist stated, "Ms. Maghirang’s lack of success as a student had nothing to do with intellectual shortcomings or lack of motivation and that, in fact, it fit perfectly with the landscape of disturbances most survivors experience in the aftermath of severe trauma. Unbeknown to her, Ms. Maghirang had been experiencing symptoms consistent with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for the duration of her first year at Hunter, including difficulty concentrating, recurrent and intrusive thoughts and memories of the sexual violence she suffered."
Can anyone imagine going through that and having it not affect you academically? Being a sexual assault survivor is not a reason to isolate students, we need to support them, not shame them, victim-blame, or deny them their right to education in a healthy environment.
Please help Regina return to Hunter.
