The COVID-19 pandemic has had multiple negative impacts on CUNY’s student body, exacerbating and magnifying inequalities that existed prior to the current pandemic. At the present time, imposing new fees would be unethical, and even a hindrance to students’ matriculation and success.

More than 250,000 CUNY students are already impacted by the City’s present economic crisis. The pandemic has taken its course and laid off hundreds of students within the University as well as parents. Many have already been uprooted from their dorms and transitioned to distance learning for the duration of the Spring semester. Now more than ever, students are financially unstable and uncertain about their futures.

The $120 mental health fee will impact students directly. In addition, there is no guarantee that wait times to see an on-campus counselor will be meaningfully shortened, particularly when a student is experiencing an acute mental health crisis, and time is of the essence. In a crisis, it is the state’s responsibility, not the students, to provide services, like counseling, that are even more essential post COVID. Yet the students have increased their contribution to CUNY in the last decade while the state’s share has remained largely stagnant.

In an era of high unemployment–which the COVID-19 crisis is unfortunately engendering–access to quality and affordable public higher education is more important than ever. It is our hope that by shedding more light on this new fee and raising awareness by gaining as many signatures opposing it, we can pressure CUNY and the Governor to stop the Health and Wellness fee.
