We demand Cumbria County Council increases SEND provision in Cumbria
Why this petition matters
We the undersigned urge Cumbria County Council to increase funding for Special educational needs in our area so that children with autism and profound special needs can attend a specialist setting of their/their parents choice.
Children who can't speak, aren't toilet trained and who are overwhelmed by busy environments will be forced into mainstream classrooms this September if more funding doesn't become available.
Early specialist intervention is the only universally agreed method of improving the outcome of autistic children in later life and more spaces are needed at Mayfield and other specialist seetings to cope with the increasing demand in West Cumbria.
This year only 14 places were funded by Cumbria County Council and over 40 parents applied meaning many have been left distraught and with no idea of where to send their children.
Many of these children, including my son are non-verbal and have no voice.
We need to be their voice.
