Junior Prom is next weekend and the school administration just decided to open it up to the Sophomore class. Students at Cumberland High School have been back in school in-person for nearly two months now, as we all are working hard to recover from the rollercoaster that has resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. Classes across the country missed out on prom because of this as well. The class of 2022 is lucky in that we’ve still been able to have ours, however we are, understandably, upset that the school is not taking Junior Prom as seriously as we would like them to. After last year, one would think that those in charge of planning, organizing, and supervising Prom would understand how important the experience is to high schoolers, and that losing it, or the meaning of it in general, takes away from the high school experience, which most people will remember for decades, if not their whole lives. The Junior class of 2022 does not want the sophomore class to go to Junior Prom. We want our class to enjoy the prom we thought we’d have. The name “Junior Prom” means nothing anymore when an entire class is invited. Besides, the sophomore class will have next year, and the year after that, to have their junior and senior proms. If ticket sales are a problem, then perhaps the price, or advertising for tickets is the reason for the lack of sales. Regardless of how many tickets are sold, the intent remains: for Juniors to have a prom. Adding another class for the sake of money defeats the purpose. We pay enough in dues and for the $60 tickets that there should be enough to host prom. Those who have signed this agree that Junior prom should be JUNIORS ONLY (and the dates of those juniors if they are in another class and there is room, which clearly there is). Thank you for your time, and signatures. Hopefully the school will actually listen to its students for once.
