Why this petition matters

Started by Lujain Albashiry

Mount Roskill Grammar School is one of the most diverse schools in the country. However, students from Mount Roskill Grammar School are unable to express their cultures. An example of this was Cultural week when students of MRGS were not given the opportunity to show their cultural clothing.

Only students in cultural groups were able to express their cultures and their clothing on Thursday and Friday during lunch times for only forty-five minutes including the time to get changed into cultural clothing, set up their stalls, get changed back into uniform and clean up the stall after lunch.

Fortunately, Samoan and Tongan students have the opportunity to express their cultural identity during their respective language weeks. However this is not enough as all students should have the opportunity to express their cultures.

While Mount Roskill Grammar school is one of the most diverse schools in New Zealand, for years our school students were not given the opportunity to express their cultures and backgrounds and the school has yet to do something about it.

This issue will not be resolved until everyone in the school is given the opportunity to wear their cultural clothes and express their identities and be proud that they attend a school that gives them this opportunity .
