Our purpose of creating this petition is to show Oklahoman Legislators and the school administrators that people are in support of stopping cultural and ethnic discrimination.

Our school has decided to amend its policy to allow all headwear. This should be an action done by all Oklahoma public facilities. We are advocating for this change by creating a movement to inspire a new piece of Legislation. 

If a law were to get passed to protect freedom of cultural expression it would not only end cultural discrimination at Byng, but everywhere in Oklahoma. 

It’s repression of people’s culture masked as “dress code”. Schools, jobs, and all public facilities should value diversity, even if it means allowing people to wear their cultural headwear, hair styles, ethnic clothing, and etc. 

The headwrap to us, as African Americans, is a symbol of past oppression that our ancestors overcame and a way for us to connect with our racial identity. By wearing headwraps, we are taking back the culture that was wrongfully taken away from our ancestors. We are celebrating the beauty of being African.
