Cuba and the United States: Free American Citizen Alan Gross
Alan Gross is an American citizen who is literally fighting for his life in a Cuban prison. He has been wrongfully imprisoned there since December 2009 – sentenced to 15 years on sham charges of undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cuba. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention recently ruled that Alan is being detained in violation of international law.
In fact, however, Alan was doing nothing more than helping to improve wireless access for the small, non-dissident Jewish community on the island as a sub-contractor with the US Agency for International Development. Alan made his last trip to Cuba on November 24, 2009. He was arrested on December 3, 2009, and sent to prison but not charged for 14 months. He has already spent more than three years in prison for his alleged actions against the State of Cuba and a subversive project to bring down the revolution.
Right now Alan is suffering and so is his family.
Since his detention, Alan has lost 105 pounds. He has degenerative arthritis in his leg and a mass behind his shoulder, which a US doctor says may be cancer. He also suffers great mental anguish caused by the separation from his family, several of whom have serious health ailments.
Alan's family is under great stress and pressure. His daughter, wife, and mother have all suffered ill health since his imprisonment. Without Alan's income, his wife Judy had to sell the family home and move to a small apartment. His mother, who suffers from inoperable cancer, fears that she will never see her son again. The longer Alan remains in jail, the greater the toll on the entire family.
We ask you to sign this petition to demand Alan's immediate release that the Cuban and U.S. governments sit down and resolve Alan’s case.

I am writing this letter to convey my serious concern regarding the wrongful conviction and ongoing imprisonment of an American citizen, Alan Gross. As you are aware, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, an independent and impartial group consisting of experts from Chile, Norway, Pakistan, Senegal, and Ukraine, recently found he is being held in violation of international law.
Alan has been imprisoned in Cuba since December 2009 - sentenced to 15 years in prison for allegedly undermining the territorial sovereignty integrity of Cuba. In fact, Alan was helping to improve wireless access for the small, non-dissident Jewish community on the island. Alan’s work in the community and international development has positively impacted the lives of countless people in over 50 countries and territories worldwide.
He wants only the best for Cuba’s people. He had no intention of doing anything wrong. Yet, the Cuban justice system convicted him in a sham trial that put forth no evidence of his alleged crimes. As a result, Alan has spent more than three years in prison and suffers from a series of health problems that are not being properly addressed by the Cuban government.
If President Castro of Cuba really wants better relations with the United States, as he says, he must immediately and unconditionally release Alan. I also call on President Obama to reach out to the Government of Cuba and take whatever actions are necessary to bring Alan home.
Alan has lost everything - his family, business, and reputation - while he awaits justice that has long been delayed. Alan is a father of two adult daughters, a husband, and a brother, and a fellow American. I stand united with his family until Alan gets back his freedom.
