In 2015, it was estimated that 26% of Kern County residents have less than a high school education and 33.86% of families in Kern County are run by single parents (United States Census Bureau, 2015). These statistics along with the fact that residents of Kern County earn on average $12,797 less than the national average are reasons as to why affordable childcare is in desperate need. The latest available data from the U.S. Census Bureau (2011) reveal that families who paid for child care with children under the age of five spent an average of, $716 per month in 2011. In 2001, 40% of poor single mothers spent more than half their cash income on child care.
