This problem directly impacts students. In dining, students face high prices of meals. They are unaffordable and inconvenient for students. Due to the high prices of food, some students will starve. We are a working-class college where students go from work to school and so forth, the only option that students have is to purchase the food here or starve. Commuting students also struggle because they live far from home and have a choice from expensive dining food that is “healthy” or fast food outside of campus. Many students can not afford food so they go hungry. Many have to leave campus and this results in stress and anxiety to make it back to class in time or to work. When students are hungry, they are not focusing on course material and instead think of food. We would like to see food prices in CSU Stanislaus dining lowered for students to be able to afford them. We would like to address the overcharged produce and food. The average plate costs 8 dollars and 12 dollars for a combo. The convenience store “Pops” offers snacks that are twice as expensive there. Now we know the minimum wage is 12$ an hour, an average college student works 19 hours a week, making 228 dollars per check, which does not include the taxes that are being taken out as well. The food costs are very extreme. Students have to pay a lot of expenses, including books, rent, everyday essentials bills, and loans. Some have no other option but to scram for cash and pay for the food or go hungry. We believe administration at CSU Stanislaus and the President have the power to change these overpriced food items, especially through pressure from students.
