To the Director of Education, CSC MonAvenir

Dear Mr. Blais,

The new school year is upon us, and so many families are experiencing anxiety and confusion about the Ontario Government's Back to School Plan. Health Care workers in particular have seen first-hand, the perils of not carrying out protective public health measures, early and at a community level. Now we, the families of the Conseil Catholique Mon Avenir are calling out for the protection of some of our most vulnerable members of society - our children.

Many school boards in Toronto and the GTA have made mandatory the wearing of masks by all students, from JK through grade 12. Also, many have changed their earliest school start dates from September 8th to Monday September 14th, thereby giving the schools a full week more to prepare for a safer return to class. Commission scolaire Mon Avenir has not. We need this in the higher density and most affected areas, such as Toronto and the GTAYou have the power to change this.

  • Please, heed the multiple public health warnings and the actions taken by other school boards. Masks are not perfect, they are often not worn perfectly, but like other skills, this too can be taught to children from JK to Grade 3. My son, who is entering grade 1 this year, is on the autism spectrum, and has multiple sensory issues. But  has learned to wear a mask, and to keep it on. If he can do it, others can do it.
  • Please, delay our Toronto and GTA schools' start date by a week, therefore giving school principles, teachers, and the many other workers the precious gift of TIME to get it right.

There is still time to act. We implore you to do the right thing. Please take these simple measures to keep us all safe.
