LGBTQ+ resource center on the CSB|SJU campuses

The LGBTQ+ community experiences homophobia, transphobia, queerphobia, biphobia, and other forms of oppression in society, including on the CSB|SJU campuses. LGBTQ+ students do not feel welcome, secure, safe, or comfortable in the college atmosphere, nor do they have the accessibility or resources to proper physical, mental, sexual, and other health services. A proposed solution is establishing an institutionalized resource center that provides a plethora of resources for LGBTQ+ students. The resource center is a necessary component to these college campuses because of the institutional values of respect for persons, inclusion, community, hospitality, diversity, equity, and justice. A resource center would contribute to deepening our Benedictine values and strengthening the CSB|SJU community as a whole. Therefore, to fully advocate and have inclusive campuses there must be an implementation of a resource center that allows students to feel they can express themselves, live out their truth, and be welcome within the community.

The mission of the LGBTQ+ resource center says:
The purpose of the LGBTQIA+ resource center is to be a safe haven for students primarily from CSB|SJU and the greater community area that currently identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community as well as students who are questioning. We recognize that identities in our global community intersect with and impact our daily experiences of gender and sexuality with race, ethnicity, class, ability, age, culture, and all social systems. An LGBTQ+ resource center represents an institutionalized department for students to converse with their peers who have a deepening concern for LGBTQ+ issues. The center will ensure students do not feel alone or uncomfortable on campus by providing space in meetings, events, and other areas for students to voice their concerns. Hence, we acknowledge and guarantee that the LGBTQ+ resource center will promote the full inclusion and advocacy of LGBTQ+ folks and allies, while intersectionally working to dismantle prejudice, discrimination, and oppression toward and within the LGBTQ+ community on campus.

This resource center also will not just provide for LGBTQ+ students but to all students who are questioning, allies, or express an interest to learn more about LGBTQ+ education and the community. Services that are offered and accessible through the resource center are also for ALL STUDENTS - not just LGBTQ+ students."The LGBTQ+ resource center promotes the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ folk and allies and works to intersectionally dismantle prejudice, discrimination, and oppression toward and within the LGBTQ+ community." - St. Cloud State LGBT Resource Center

The LGBTQ+ resource center is working collaboratively to establish a Multi-cultural center and inclusive, multi-faith prayer space. By supporting this project, you are advocating and standing in solidarity with intercultural and interfaith students who are represented and advocated for through these spaces.

This petition applies to you, regardless of your identity. Your truth matters, your feelings matter, your resources matter, and you deserve a university and college that practices what they preach.
