Dear Fellow CSB/SJU Students,

As we begin to plan for school this coming year, there are many questions and concerns about how students will transition back into the normal schedule. There are many opinions about the effectiveness of the block schedule versus the traditional schedule. Numerous students find the block schedule to be very beneficial, while others do not. Although academic affairs announced we are going back to a traditional schedule, we as students feel that we deserve more of a say in the future of our education.

The block schedule consists of having one four-credit class for three and a half weeks, with classes meeting for 3 hours on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. On Wednesdays, students have no class, one-credit classes, or two-credit classes.

The traditional schedule consists of having multiple four-credit classes throughout the semester. Classes are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for 55 minutes, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 80 minutes.

The new schedule that we are proposing uses multiple aspects of each of these schedules. Classes would be held on Mondays and Thursdays, Tuesdays and Fridays, meeting for 80 minutes each day. Wednesdays would remain open for no class, one-credit classes, or two-credit classes. One option for this new schedule would be having two eight-week blocks per semester, with two four-credit classes per eight-week block. Another option for this new schedule would be having multiple four-credit classes that run for the whole semester.

We would continue to use hybrid learning. We anticipate Covid-19 will still be a global problem, and utilizing hybrid learning will allow everyone to maintain social distancing. As students, we have found that having our Wednesdays open in the block schedule allows us to keep up with our workload, and physical and mental health. Continuing to have Wednesdays off in this compromised schedule will allow us to do that.

As students that have participated in both the block schedule and the traditional schedule, we believe that this is the best compromise for everyone. Other schools, Hamline, for instance, utilize this type of schedule. We think this new schedule proposal would work great for all CSB/SJU students. This is a call for academic affairs and administration to rethink the "normal" schedule in abnormal times.
