Luxury Leisure, which runs Admiral Casino has put in an application to turn 91 High Street, Thornton Heath, which was formerly HSBC bank in to an adult gaming centre.

The community is objecting to the application for an adult gaming centre for the primary reason that the proposal is contrary to the Local Plan and therefore should be refused as it undermines the High Street’s vitality.

  • The Thornton Heath ward has the third highest crime rate in Croydon with higher comparative levels of anti social behaviour, theft, criminal damage, drugs and violent and sexual offences.  Source: data.police.uk
  • The adult gaming centre would be located in an area of high deprivation (Source: DCLG, 2015) which is associated with poor physical and mental health.
  • The proposed premises are opposite a leisure centre which is regularly visited by groups of primary age children attending swimming lessons. There are two Whitehorse Manor primary schools at either end of the High Street on Whitehorse Road and Brigstock Road.
  • The premises are a short distance walk from four other betting shops which already provide access to fixed odds betting terminals: William Hill X2, Paddy Power and Coral.
