Natalia Moskwa started this petition to Leon Seymour-Smith (Stakeholder Engagement Manager (CRR)) and

Fairfield train station is in a quaint character area of Brisbane, with narrow residential streets on either side. A much needed access upgrade will be delivered as part of the Cross River Rail (CRR) Project, however the proposed design is unsympathetic to the residential character surrounds, and will add a bulky, vertically imposing crossing of about 3-storeys to the lowest and narrowest part of the street, raising concerns with the local community, namely:

1.      The design is not in harmony with the surrounding character houses or the existing character station, and is unsympathetic to the residential nature of the area, i.e. it is not a commercial or business area and should not have a crossing that looks like it belongs in Southbank;

2.      The design is 3-storeys high, bulky with an imposing street presence;

3.      The crossing has been moved to the lowest and narrowest part of the street, necessitating the high build and not allowing for a pick-up/drop-off area;

4.      No mitigation plan for increased commuter park-and-ride traffic on narrow residential streets;

5.      An increase in light and noise pollution;

6.      Removal of original timber crossing;

7.      Removal of station house/s.

Feedback was given to CRR, however their response has not addressed concerns raised, and no plan changes are apparent.

Accessibility can be delivered in a sympathetic package, and Fairfield deserves a station that delivers to all stakeholders and is:

1.      in harmony with the surrounding character houses;

2.      appropriate for a residential area in size, scale, illumination and sound design;

3.      located on a higher part of the street to reduce vertical size and bulk;

4.      located on a wider part of the street to allow for drop-off/pick up;

5.      includes a mitigation plan for increased commuter park-and-ride traffic on narrow residential streets;

6.      retains the original timber crossing;

7.      keeps both station houses on the platform.

This is an opportunity to demonstrate that accessibility and sympathetic design are not mutually exclusive - let's get this right!
