Why this petition matters

Started by Ruth Abraham

To raise awareness to an issue affecting our community; the lack of support services for people in our community struggling with life and the complications that we all have deal with in life.

On the 25 November 2021, I had to do something no mother should ever have to do and that was find out my son, Kurk Abraham, had committed suicide.  Kurk was only 23 years old, leaving behind a mother and his five loving sisters, not to mention the rest of his family and friends who adored him.  Kurk was a loving and caring person, involved in the community with CFA, Clontarf and he would mentor any one in need. He had an uncanny knack to just arrive when he was needed the most.

After my son’s suicide, I have had quite a few parents confide in me about their children’s attempt at suicide and how Swan Hill is lacking in any services or programs that can help them or their children during their time of need. Swan Hill as a town, has had so many suicides it’s devastating on our community.  As a relatively small community town it is not just devastating to those personally effected by the death but the community as a whole feels the effects.

I have been talking to a number of organisations and we have all come to the conclusion that Swan Hill and its vulnerable are lacking any form of treatment or help to prevent these devastating suicides and they will keep happening and I'm trying to find a way to get people help and prevent them.

My ultimate goal, supported by the organisations I have spoken to, is to have a 24/7 fully staffed Crisis Centre located in Swan Hill.
