At Longfellow Middle School (LMS), we have a variety of clubs. These consist of anything from Computer Science to Debate. However, all of the sports clubs are not necessary teams.

These “clubs” are a small opportunity for students to get familiar with a sport and play it after school. In reality, many students want to be able to participate in an organized sports team of their choice.

For instance, girl’s volleyball is usually run by Mclean Athletics, a nearby youth sports program, in the spring. Boys’ is in the fall.

If a girl wanted to do volleyball in the fall, and a boy wanted to in the spring, they wouldn’t be able to with this program.

Other’s oppose this thought by saying there are other sports programs in the area. However, specifically for volleyball in this example, it is usually co-ed. Not all girls (and boys of course) may be comfortable with this arrangement.

We believe that the creation of sports teams at LMS will increase student participation in extracurricular activities. It will also benefit their physical and mental health.
