Why this petition matters

Climate change may lead to food shortages in the future, due to increasingly extreme and unpredictable weather. This will mean that commercials crops are less reliable, which result in less availability of food and an increase in the price of retail food prices.

Penzance & Newlyn are already impoverished areas, with many locals struggling to pay their bills and find work. Future increases in food shortages will hit these local people very hard and they will likely bear the brunt of the problem first, while the more affluent will still be able to afford to eat. This will increase the already glaring problem of economic inequality in the Penzance Newlyn area.

We believe that this problem can be addressed by increasing the number of Penzance Town Council owned allotments in the area. Growing your own food is much cheaper than buying it from a supermarket and allotments are much for easily adaptable to the demands of climate change than commercial farms, which means that they may be able to perform more reliably than mainstream agriculture.

We call on Penzance Town Council to put install more allotments to help Penzance & Newlyn residents escape from the consequences of climate changeand of the economic inequality that will result.
