LA Counth is dealing with a housing shortage crisis. The demand for housing is at an all-time high and the competition to buy or lease, increases the housing market price. This in turn affects our low-income households with the issue of affordability. It's an issue that has contributed to the homeless crisis in the state. LA County has an abundance of job opportunities which has attracted many to move to the area. An increasing number of people moving into the county increases the demand for more housing and development is met with barriers, such as city zoning codes. State Policy SB 1333 Planning and Zoning regulates and enforces restrictions on the building of new properties throughout the state. This affects development plans to build more and has reduced the ability to build houses at the speed of demand. Developers are set back by various city restrictions. Therefore, we need to allow for more housing development to fit the needs of demand.

My mission in this petition is to advocate for a reduction in city code restrictions for developers. This would allow them to build more housing units in LA County at the speed of demand. In turn this would reduce the competition for housing and reduce the costs of living. Additionally, this would contribute to decreasing the rates of homelessness. Californians should not fear the risk of becoming homeless because they can't afford to live where they work!
