Who are we petitioning?
Robert Goodwill MP, Minister of State for Children and Families
What do we want him to do?
We want there to be a National Day for Children in Care in England
We, the Five Rivers Child Care national Youth Council think children in care must be some of the bravest, most resilient people in England. We are asking the Children’s Minister, Robert Goodwill and the UK Government to help recognise young people’s achievements by setting up a national day.
Why is this important?
Do you know how it feels to be discriminated against and stigmatised?
We do, yet many of us are overcoming bad experiences and achieving good things. We are 9 children aged between 11 and 18 passionate about changing the misperceptions and negative stereotypes of children currently in care and care leavers. At our recent meeting we decided that we wanted to do something about it. We decided the best way to change the perceptions that the public had about us would be to set up National Children in Care Day.
A national day to celebrate the achievements of children and young people in care would be very meaningful for the more than 70,000 children currently in care. It would also be supported by many thousands of carers such as the foster families that look after them, residential homes, educators, social workers and local authority staff that are responsible for their safety.
There is a national day for children in care in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland - so why can’t there be one in England?
We would like you to watch this film and show your support by signing our petition. We need to get 10,000 signatures to get a response from government.
We will send this film to all the leaders and big organisations in the country to help us realise our dream and to celebrate the lives and achievement of children who grow up in care.
