Ellie Carey started this petition to Crawley Borough Council

Today I went to my local play park with my 2 year old and 4 month old. I haven’t been recently because it can get quite muddy and I’ve been growing in confidence about what I can do with my toddler and baby within a short walk of my home.

I was shocked at the neglected state of the play equipment in the fenced off part of the play area. This is not on the part of the people who use the facilities but the council. This is not something that has been neglected due to the current pandemic but years of it.

There are massive cracks and gaps in the ground (I’ve forgotten what the name of the special ground they put down for safety), there is awful rust and chipped paint and metal coming away from the main frame! All other playground I have been too in Crawley are not in this state.

The newer play equipment, as lovely as it is, isn’t suitable for pre schoolers. With the family centres needing to be closed and poor, unsafe outdoor play equipment this is not enough for the young children of the local area. The government have been clear that the pre-school age is a critical time for a child’s development. A play park provides incredible chances for developing a child’s gross and fine motor skills, social development, problem solving and builds confidence. At the moment the Northgate play park is unsafe and an accident waiting to happen.

The absolute minimum this petition is looking to achieve is for the council to make what is there now safe. But I am sure we can all agree that the equipment needs to be replaced and then maintained by the council.
