Cleanway the contractor engaged by Moonee Valley City Council (MVCC) has in the past 3 months been using higher and longer trucks in Marshall Street, Flemington for waste collection. Marshall Street is particularly narrow street lined with 80+ year old plane trees forming a magnificent canopy over the street. Street signage erected by MVCC on the corner of Marshall and Newmarket Streets and on the Corner of Clarence and Racecourse Road indicate these streets are not suitable for large vehicles.
Marshall and Clarence Street precinct are subject to Heritage Overlay HO461 which sites the trees as part of the areas significance with 27 trees in Marshall Street listed as TRN 322 on the Moonee Valley Trees of Significance 2018.
On the 10th of September 2021, a Cleanway truck caused significant damage to the tree outside of 58 Marshall Street while reversing out of the dead end of the western end of the Street. The tree was split down the trunk so badly it now has to be removed.
This is petition by residence of the area is for MVCC to instruct it's contractors Cleanawy to return to using smaller vehicles in Marshall Street so that no further damage can be caused to the Street trees which are of significance to the community and to the neighbourhood character and heritage of the Flemington area.
