At a time when the Government should be investing more in tertiary education, the Gillard Government has announced tragic "savings measures" to the sector that will have damaging effects for both students and the institutions. These so-called "savings measures" will have the following impacts:
1. Putting extra costs on students to pay back the Students Start-Up Scholarship in addition to the continuously rising HECS fees.
2. Putting universities under pressure to find cost savings that will result in units being cut, teaching staff numbers being decreased, and university research being decreased.
3. Putting students with lower attendance and retention rates at university (such as students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, students from rural and regional areas, and indigenous students) under added pressure by universities having to significantly cut the support services for these students.
4. Making universities less internationally competitive by reducing their budgets at the same time as other Governments around the world are increasing their funding to universities.
