This petition requests that the Councillors of the Lockyer Valley Region do not support the development of a motocross facility at Adare, and that they not entertain any further proposal until such time as a responsible, adequately detailed proposal at a more appropriate location is forthcoming.

The motocross development at Adare is proposed to be done in two stages.  Stage 1 will have one motocross track with up to 40 bikes at a time - operating from 4pm to 9pm Tuesday to Friday, and 9am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday - all year.  When "events" are held they will run from 9am to 9pm on weekends.

With the completion of Stage 2 it will become a five-track motocross park with a capacity for 200 bikes at one time, operating on the same timetable.

The area that would be affected by this development lies between the regional centre of Gatton (pop. 6869* and less than 5km from the motocross site) and Lockyer National Park.  The affected community is made up of a diverse range of small farmers and graziers, professional people and retirees, with a large proportion of young families.  There are estimated to be 900 people living within 4 km of the site, and a considerable number more along feeder roads who will be affected.

The community has significant concerns about the adequacy of descriptions of likely impacts and proposed mitigation measures in the documentation provided by the developer.  In particular these relate to: noise impacts on the community; sedimentation and water quality impacts on Redbank Creek and downstream residents and businesses; bushfire risk (to the community, patrons, and the National Park); traffic (road safety and disturbance to residents); water supply; impacts on wildlife; and introduction of fire ants. No effective management or mitigation plans are provided for any of these.

As an example of just one issue - Stage 1 will put an additional 150 vehicles into the area during the hour when children are coming home from school - on roads and intersections not designed for this level of traffic.  Six nights per week there will be up to 150 vehicles leaving the track after 9.00pm.  Stage 2 with an extra four tracks will result in a massive increase in traffic and road safety issues.

The local community is generally not opposed to motocross, understanding that this is a growing sport.  In fact Lockyer Valley ratepayers have already contributed $40,000 to the development of a major regional motocross facility within one hour of most population centres in Southeast Queensland. However, the site of the current proposal is unsuitable for a development of the type proposed, to the extent that adequate mitigation of impacts will not be possible.

Please support this petition if you value a vibrant rural lifestyle, a healthy, resilient community, and the viable rural businesses in the Lockyer Valley - all protected by sensible planning decisions.

Your support will remind the Councillors of the commitments that they have made to the implementation of the Community Plan (Lockyer: Our Valley, Our Vision - 2012-2022).

If you have any comments about negative experiences you have had with Motocross facilities, please leave them in the ‘I’m signing because…’ field.
