Why this petition matters

Women suffering in silence is still prominent even in 2021. Patriarchy roots dominate across all socio-economic grades and women despite being educated, independent, qualified face dominance and untold violence in different forms.

Being patrilocal society women relocate post marriage to in-law or husband's house and they are being forced to deposit the gold and valuables given by parents to the male head of the matrimonial house. It is common to relocate from one state to another in view of the job or livelihood. When a woman is forcefully thrown out of the house by in-laws or by her husband, the woman struggles in a new state and some may not be able to speak the local language. Also, marital issues often do not end in one instance and they take a considerable amount of time to take the further steps of divorce or file a complaint or patch up with the help of elders.

Often such women visit their parental house which might be in a different state and will initiate the processes accordingly. Being a victim of this situation, the experiences show that there is an interstate policy for women to help them gain access and obtain their belongings and valuables i.e., commonly referred to as Streedhan which was given by her parents. The other family takes complete advantage of this situation and plays with the woman's emotions who is already a victim of domestic violence and practically lost everything. When she files a complaint it will be in the jurisdiction of her parental house and the husband family will never be caught or questioned so easily as this on the priority list of complaint comes to be at the bottom for police and court hearing only can help her find some solution which takes at least 2 to 3 years. This makes her suffer further in the pain where there is severe emotional distress, financial and time loss.

There are several one-stop centers but there is no interstate coordination to resolve the issues and help a woman to gain back her belongings and valuables. Why not a centralized network be established to resolve these issues by coordination and help the woman to get her valuables from the husband's family??

Help me file a petition to give a thought on asking the policymakers, law enablers, women commissions, feminists to achieve an interstate policy for women to access and get back her valuables from husband's family.
