We the residents of Prince George’s County Call on the County Executive & the County Council to Follow the Law: No New Taxes Without Voter Approval.
Both the County Executive and six Members of the County Council have recently ignored the will of Prince George’s voters by openly violating two key provisions of the Prince George’s County Charter. In 1978, the Charter mandated a cap on the property tax RATE popularly know as the Tax Reform Initiative for Marylanders (“TRIM")(Section 812 of the Charter). In 1996, 71% of county voters also approved an amendment to the Charter that mandated that all tax increases be referred to the ballot for a vote by county residents-No New Taxes Without Voter Approval (Section 813 of the Charter).
The 2016 county budget process is underway, and the County Council has approved a 4% real property tax rate increase, as well as other increases including telecommunications and park and planning.
Why are citizens overwhelming against the tax increases?
-County residents already have the HIGHEST property tax bill in the region
- Residents are still recovering from the foreclosure crisis and this tax increase could push more homeowners underwater
- County officials are blatantly violating both the letter and spirit of TRIM and the tax referendum provisions in the charter
- The right of county voters to amend the county charter has been stripped
