While the holds to go system is great, and I am very appreciative of all that our libraries do, I think we are at a place where libraries can open for browsing. Holds to go is great for when you want a book for the foreseeable future, but browsing gives us the luxury of getting what we need on the same day, and for a lot of book lovers, simply browsing books a library is a soothing end to a hard day. I 100 percent take COVID seriously. I myself, am immune compromised and take the caution I can. I am proud to be in a county that takes this seriously, however I fully believe we can open libraries to the public in a safe manner.

Here are my reasons to open:

1: When I say open libraries I mean this with precautions. If we open with limited capacity, of course face mask required, we would have the same exposure as a store. made even safer if we have appointed times to come browse. This is the same policy used for bookstores, quarantining returns and doing this, will make the same environment of a bookstore in terms of safely.

2: While holds to go is a great system, it’s harder to use when someone needs a novel for school in a certain time, it’s much easier to be able to take it home in the same day.

3: On top of this, a lot of readers who can’t spend tons of money on a bookstore, love the idea of walking in and being able to impulsively walk out with five books and no financial burden. A lot of people, like myself, love to go to the library as a treat, an add on to a calm Sunday, or a small trip to look forward to on a hard day.

4: This option simply may help the poor mental health that comes with the state we are in during this pandemic.  I don’t know about others, but I used to go to the library when I was having a hard day mentally, it always gave me something to feel hopeful about, the prospect of new reads found on the spot, something so I can hold on through that day a bit longer. While reading isn’t as popular  these days, this opening, will guarantee to be a positive when it comes to our current mental health crisis.

Overall, I think the library is safe to open along with what is currently open. Please sign this petition if you agree, and hopefully we can have this wonderful source in our community more available to us in these trying days.
