Compost Collection in Baltimore County

Baltimore County has only one public landfill, the Easter Sanitary Solid Waste Management Facility, which as of 2012 was over 51% full. Constructing a new landfill would cost the county millions. According to the EPA, about 24% of municipal waste is organic matter which can be composted. Aside from reducing our environmental impact, composting provides nutrient rich soil which can be sold by the county. In order prolong the life of the Eastern Sanitary Solid Waste Management Facility in a least-cost manner, the county should begin collecting compost materials using a similar method to trash and recycling collection.
