George Mainescu started this petition to County Executive James Tedesco and

Dear County Executive,

This petition is regarding the status of the tennis courts in two county parks, Pascack Brook and Wood Dale.

Both of these parks in our county have tennis courts, but they are in such a state of disrepair that they are currently not usable. In fact, since the start of the pandemic, these courts have been locked and residents have not been able to play.

We, a large contingent of tennis lovers in Bergen County, are submitting this petition such that you will consider the repair of the tennis courts. We are asking that the county initiate the necessary repairs to revert these tennis courts back to their original state.

When these courts were usable, there were many families, including parents with kids, and other local players, that would benefit from being able to play tennis and enjoy being outside. This is a great and important benefit to being residents of Bergen County. Unfortunately, this is not possible anymore because of the state the courts are currently in. And, as some nearby towns have begun to limit access to their tennis courts to just the local residents, it is becoming even more important to have more public tennis courts that are available for use.

We, the residents of Bergen County who love playing tennis, would like to ask you to consider the renovation and resurfacing of the aforementioned tennis courts – and in particular, that you resurface them with the same kind of hard court surface that was initially used, as that is the only surface that is appropriate for tennis.

In support of this petition, we have attached one picture (more available) showing the current state of the courts, as well as a support letter below from the United States Tennis Association (USTA), original available upon request, emphasizing the benefit of making this type of activity available to residents.

Thank you for your help and support for this initiative!

USTA Letter of support

To whom it may concern:

This letter serves to support the petition for Bergen County to resurface their tennis courts.

United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern, hereby supports the application by George Mainescu on behalf of the Bergen county tennis community to support the resurfacing of the Bergen County Park Tennis Courts. We believe investment in tennis in your community is valuable for a number of reasons:
- Tennis is a healthy, socially distanced sport that can be played at any age, from toddler to 100 and is enjoyed by all members of our communities across race, gender, socio-economic status etc.
- Tennis is a growing sport. Since the pandemic we have seen a rise of more than 4 million new players registering to play tennis across the United States.

Studies have identified that park tennis courts encourage park programs and family and community interaction that supports local communities. The resurfacing of the courts would support opportunities to hold events such as tournaments, family fund days, tennis jamborees etc. USTA is committed to supporting setting up these events in partnership with local parks and communities.
Once a court is resurfaced it lasts for up to 30 years which is a long term investment in the community.
National USTA have a facilities department that can support the planning and guidance on engineering at no cost.

Once your courts are resurfaced, USTA Eastern will be happy to connect with you to help set up tennis programs on your new courts. We can help identify appropriate programing for your community to cater for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels for kids, teenagers, adults, elderly and adaptive. These programs can include youth camps, adult social and competitive leagues, adaptive programing, tournaments and events. Tennis is healthy, safe and fun.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions.
