  • For a decade now, every year I have cared for hedgehogs, owls, swans and other wild animals  in the rescue centre I founded, Herefordshire Wildlife Rescue. We fight to save their lives when they first arrive, giving hydration fluids and medicine, providing warmth and nursing. Once they are stabilised, we clean and feed them every day, sometimes for 6 months if they arrive in the autumn. We can keep them healthy and safe.  When it comes to releasing them however, it’s a different story. We know that out there, the world is becoming more hostile for wildlife.  These hedgehogs and all wildlife  need wild places in which to live. This petition is calling for a principle called ‘half earth’ which was proposed by eminent Harvard ecologist Edward Wilson. The idea is that half the earth is left for wild creatures to flourish. We propose that for every acre of developed land, an acre of wild land is created. For every acre of land taken from nature we give an acre back and protect it from from future development so that these rescued hedgehogs, all wild animals and people have access to nature. Lockdowns have shown the desperate need for wild spaces for the human soul to flourish in. Our work shows the need for homes for wild creatures. Half earth will achieve both in one simple rule.
