Why this petition matters

Started by Tanisha Souza

This is a petition to install traffic calming speed bumps/humps along Kulamanu Street and Kulamanu Place to protect the hundreds of Kaalawai (aka Cromwell’s) beachgoers, tourists and local neighborhood residents from speeding-related motor vehicle accidents.

Neighborhood children ride their bikes and skateboards up and down the street. Hundreds of people park on our street and walk to and from the beach day and night, on weekdays, weekends and holidays. Many beachgoers are out-of-area visitors unfamiliar with the twists and turns of the street. On many occasions, there have been "close calls" and near-accidents affecting pedestrians due to people speeding through Kulamanu Street.

On the evening of Friday, October 4, 2019, a 19-year old girl was speeding toward Kahala via Diamond Head Road at over 30 mph.  She took the turn down Kulamanu Street, picked up speed and crashed her car through our concrete wall. There was no warning, no screeching brakes or skid marks because she never slowed down.  She was looking at her phone when it happened.  Her car was totaled.  Fortunately, no one was hurt, but my family and I were minutes away from walking our dog and taking out the trash and could have been killed by this driver.

We believe future accidents can be avoided.  Please help us by signing the petition in support of highly visible, reflective speed bumps along Kulamanu Street and Place to protect the neighborhood and hundreds of beachgoers from speeding cars!
