Address Our Concerns on the Proposed PS 154, PS 130, PS 230 and PS 131 Rezoning

There is concern that the planned rezoning for schools PS 154, PS 130, PS 230 and PS 131 will negatively impact residents in several ways. Our needs and concerns should be addressed before a vote is taken. Mainly:

1. Distance: The distance for many families in to both P.S. 130 and P.S./I.S. 437 is greater than 0.5 mile.  The DOE should provide busing for all elementary school children living more than 0.5 mile away from their zoned school.
 2. Street safety: Walking to 130 or 437 from the newly expanded zone will require many families to walk along or cross dangerous intersections. Before a vote is taken, the DOT needs to examine key intersections. The DOE and DOT must describe their plans for pedestrian safety at the major intersections children will need to cross if the rezoning occurs.
3. Evidence: The goals of the rezoning include reducing overcrowding and preserving diversity at local schools. While laudable, residents have not been provided with data indicating why it is believed that the newly drawn zones are the best way to accomplish this or reduce class sizes. Residents deserve to hear exactly why it is believed this newly drawn map will accomplish the stated goals before a vote is taken.
4. Time: On October 8 the DOE presented the map rezoning the 4 elementary schools.  The meeting was not well publicized and attendance was low.  The CEC is scheduled to vote on this rezoning proposal on November 12th.  Out of respect for residents' concerns, at least one CEC meeting should be held  between now and the date on which voting takes place to allow residents  to publicly voice their support for or concerns about the proposal and have the DOE respond to their concerns. The  topic of rezoning should be placed on the agenda for the next meeting,  the meeting should be well-publicized, and residents should have an opportunity to speak.
