Improve permit parking in zone 7C

Parking has become an issue of major concern for the many residents of Corktown and the new Canary District who, at this time, have no options for parking their vehicles.

Presently, some of us who were able to obtain city parking permits in the 7C permit area are now being ticketed by law enforcement. Another section of Sumach St. beside the cube building has also been rezoned from 7C to only allow residents living on that street to park there.

We have now been sequestered to only 1 street, St. Lawrence, which is only 200 metres end-to-end, to accommodate ALL residents in the area, in addition to any visitors who using the pay-and-display machines. (Note that although overnight parking for permit holders is allowed on a small stretch of King Street East, cars must be moved by 7am or risk being towed, so this is a short-sighted solution).

And yet, if you were to take a walk through the area, you would see at least 12 different zones which allow for pay-and-display parking, many of which are unused, with plenty of available spots. This fact directly shows that adding more permit parking areas would have no impact on visitor parking.

The result is that residents arrive home from their place of work or bringing their families home from school/after-school programs, and find that they have no place to leave their vehicles. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.

Residents in new buildings such as Canary Park who were able to purchase parking spots (there was a 1-year waiting list which prioritized purchasers of 2-bedroom units) are auctioning off their spots at an average price of $250-300/month, a price which is out of reach for the majority of the young families living in the area.

We are being left with no options, and this is indicative of neglectful planning on the city's part. The recent Town Hall Meeting for residents of the West Don Lands and Corktown contained no mention of plans to rectify this situation, which completely disregards the needs of residents.

Something absolutely has to be done, and soon. Even one extra street allowing permit parking would make all the difference.

Speaking on behalf of all the residents in our area, we beg the city to rectify this situation as soon as possible.
