THERE'S A LOT WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE
Help Save the Davisville Junior Public School
Neglect and throwing resources away are bad lessons for our children . . . and bad public policy. Yet without your support, the Davisville Junior Public School will be demolished. The National Trust for Canada has put it on this year’s Top Ten Endangered Places List.
For years, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) neglected Davisville Junior Public School. Now it is in a disgraceful state of repair, but not beyond it. The Minister of Education, Mitzi Hunter is rewarding dereliction with money to build a new school. Despite recommendations from the Toronto Preservation Board and Preservation Staff, Councillor Josh Matlow has blocked the school’s heritage designation to protect the deal with the province.
Davisville Junior School is a modern masterpiece designed by Peter Pennington during a heroic period of important school building under Toronto School Board Chief Architect Frederick C. Etherington. Others in this brilliant mid-century architectural collection are Lord Landsdowne Public School just off Spadina, The Adult Learning Centre at 1 Danforth Avenue, additions to Winchester School, and Glen Ames Public School.
These are very special buildings, but they are not the only schools in Toronto rotting from demolition by neglect. The TDSB predicts that its school maintenance backlog will hit $6 billion by 2020. That is a lot of derelict schools—and it’s a direct result of bad public policy.
Designs by the Architectural Conservancy Toronto's Mod Squad of prominent architects clearly demonstrate that a new school can be accommodated on the site while keeping and repurposing the existing building. But the TDSB Trustee Shelley Laskin refuses to meet to discuss options.
Unless Toronto City Council, the Minister of Education, and the TDSB change course Toronto will lose yet another important piece of its heritage.
Please help save the Davisville Junior Public School building. Sign this petition, write your trustee, councillor, and the Minister of Education.
