Westminster Council has in recent weeks issued a questionnaire
that purports to be consulting the general public on how to "successfully manage the expected growth ...for the next generation". In reality the majority of the questions are phrased and grouped in such a way as to ensure that hapless respondents will be acquiescing to more and taller buildings without even realising that they are doing such a thing.
This questionnaire should be disregarded, it is devious and dishonest.
Westminster Council is also trying to convince us that there is no alternative but to building tall, in their efforts to accommodate the "inescapable" anticipated growth (40k people projected to move to Westminster by 2036). THIS IS ALSO DISHONEST, there are many places where mid-rise buildings (up to 10-12 floors) could be built successfully in Westminster, to achieve greater density. Outer London also needs to play its part...The Mayor is indeed considering many different options that do not all resort to ruining central London.
In reality, Westminster wants to build tall in order to allow yet more greedy and unscrupulous developers to strike deals with the Council, lining its coffers at the expense of the skyline, and of all the unique and precious historic assets that make Westminster one of the world's most visited destinations.
Westminster Council already has at its disposal very well-considered and carefully drafted policies that regulate tall buildings. there is no need to re-write them. This is the latest attempt to undermine such policies to achieve a laissez-faire regime that will not be able to stop any degree of inappropriate development. THIS WOULD BE THE KISS OF DEATH TO CONSERVATION IN WESTMINSTER.
Of particular concern is the inference of potentially building taller in Paddington, Victoria and Tottenham Court Road. All three areas are already in the process of totally losing their historic character, and the local residents are up in arms. Building even taller would result in inappropriate and incongruous adjacencies with precious Conservation areas, monuments and settings.
PLEASE SAY NO TO MORE TOWERS IN CENTRAL LONDON. THERE ARE ALREADY 455 IN THE PIPELINE IN 2017. WE DON'T WANT ONE OF OUR BEST BOROUGHS TO TURN INTO DUBAI. SAVE Westminster and Londnon's CHARACTER BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE
