Imagine waking up on a campsite in the middle of the night – let’s call it Kara Tepe. Your eyes are still closed. The first thing you notice is the young boys‘ cough. One of three children from the other family with whom you and your loved ones share the seven square meter tent.[1] In the next instant a familiar smell greets your nose. An unpleasant one coming from one of the mobile toilets that you share with 29 other people every day.[2] Your hand reaches out only to find that the floor is still wet from last weeks storm[3]. You open your eyes realising that it’s still pitch-black. Electricity is only available on the other side of the camp.[4]

„On the Greek Aegean Islands [..], by the end of September, around 21,400 people were crammed into spaces with an estimated combined capacity of 6,200. Most asylum-seekers there must cope with dire living conditions and are exposed to various security risks including sexual and gender-based violence.“
- UNHCR RBE Greece Update 23 October 2020

Thousands of children, women and men on the European borders are forced to live in inhumane conditions. All during a global pandemic whose impact is already threatening individual livelihoods around the world. On the Greek Agean Islands[5], in Bosnia[6] and up next probably also on the Canary Islands[7]. In the light of winter setting in, we need to act now!

„All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.“
- Article 1, Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The situation for refugees on the European borders is unbearable and intolerable. The 27 EU member states ignore their responsibility to honour the Universal Declaration of Human rights and to find a sustainable solution for the refugees.

As our politicians don’t offer satisfactory solutions we are calling on all European citizens to act. To meet one of the most fundamental needs for refugees, especially in regards to the upcoming winter: a safe roof over their heads.

No matter if in a shared flat, an apartment, or a house with space for single individuals or families. We – the people of the 27 EU member states – want to offer people in need a room. A room that can serve as primary space to plan all future steps in a safe environment and that serves as a temporary home.

A room that offers a real perspective for the life of people in need – a room for a change!

[1] „[…] that many families have to share with another one. They cook, eat and sleep on about seven square meters.“

[2] „Mobile toilets are available, 345 in total as inhabitants told aid organization Medécins sans frontières.“

[3] „The camp site [of Kara Tepe] is based directly on the coast line and won’t withstand storm and rain.“

[4] „The electricity supply is limited to specific areas of the camp, and there are still no showers.“

[5] „Also the asylum-seekers in other overcrowded EU hotspots on Samos, Chios, Kos and Leros are stuck under inhumane conditions. Since January new arrivals on Kos are automatically being locked up. In the hotspot on Samos there are 4.314 refugees living in a camp equipped for 648 people.“

[6] „Bosnian authorities on Wednesday evicted hundreds of people from a United Nations-run migrant camp in the country's northwestern Krajina region, the Associated Press and UN officials reported. A migrant camp in the town of Bihac was emptied and shut down, with groups of mostly young men bused to a remote camp ill-equipped for winter conditions and already full to capacity.“

[7] „Between January and the end of July this year, 3,269 migrants made the crossing from West Africa to the Canary Islands, which is nearly a 600% increase on the same period in 2019, the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) says.“
