Simon Cohen started this petition to Cotswold District Council

Cirencester is a beautiful town, the 'capital' of the Cotswolds. Yet, like many towns and cities it has been defaced by numerous car-parks and excessive traffic congestion that affect the quality of life of both residents and visitors.

Cotswold District Council have decided to push ahead with yet another car-park, this time a multi-storey one on top of an existing one near a busy roundabout, ignoring greener solutions and much recent research by the University of the West of England that shows how greener, traffic free town centres, enhance both the social and economic life of a town. We need solutions that point to the future, not the past!

Mark Harris, cabinet member for car-parks, has misrepresented this research to the public, claiming the research shows that Park and Rides do not work whereas the research really shows they do if they are small and spread around entry points to the area combined with transport links (such as electric buses which many towns use). The Lib-Dem led council has declared a 'climate-emergency' (easy to do) yet has opted for an outdated solution to a pressing problem. We haven't got time for short-term solutions any more! Green party Councillor Andrew Maclean has stated: 'I thought clogging up town centres with multi-storey car parks was a lesson learned and moved on from!'

We need to preserve the beauty of Cirencester not create more congestion and traffic queues. Bizarrely, the Council cited their own research that showing that 'people don't want to walk more than five minutes to shops' as a basis for their decision! This is incredible. Mark Harris himself has emphasised 'delivery' over 'vision' maintaining that 'vision costs' BUT the real costs are not acting on congestion and pollution NOW and using short-term, outdated solutions that are not future-proofed. These costs are then kicked down the road.

The car-park will also be built in a residential area of largely social housing, meaning that they will pay the price with increased noise and worsening air quality. The Waterloo area could be used as a green space combined with much needed social housing, enhancing the area. The only vehicles we should have in the town centre are those used by people with disabilities and delivery vans that have to make essential deliveries to shops.

The Council state they will include charging points for electric vehicles.  This is pure 'Greenwashing' as only 0.3% of cars are electric at present. Lip service in the face of impending climate change and worsening air quality.

LET'S DEMAND SOMETHING BETTER THAT IS NOT SHORT-TERMISM AND ALLOWS OUR CHILDREN AND FUTURE GENERATIONS TO ENJOY A BETTER ENVIRONMENT-A BETTER CIRENCESTER! Please sign this petition of you are resident in the Cotswolds Council area (include your postcode!) and care about the future of Cirencester and its place in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
