Stop Selling The Sun

This petition had 1,002 supporters

Dear Costcutter,

We are writing to request that you stop selling The Sun newspaper at the Warwick University Costcutter until the Page 3 feature is removed. So far LSE, UCL, Manchester Met, Manchester University, Chester, Abertay, Edinburgh, Dundee, Stirling, Cardiff, Durham, Sheffield, Newcastle, Essex, Cambridge University, Brasenose College, St Hugh’s College, New College, University College and Teddy Hall Oxford have all voted in favour of removing the newspaper from their shops – We want to add Warwick to that list.

The Sun is the most widely-read newspaper in the United Kingdom, and the largest featured image of a woman inside it is a semi-naked, passive one. Her only reason for being there is for the sexual gratification of men. But when figures range from 300,000 women being sexually assaulted each year, to 1 in 4 who have been sexually assaulted in their lifetime, and 1 in 7 during their time at university, is it wise to perpetuate the notion that women are sexual objects? We don’t think so.

If you look inside The Sun, the images of men are of them... doing things. Running the country mostly. Being important. Being allowed to wear clothes, and grow old. Even when Jessica Ennis won her gold medal in Summer 2012, the image of her in The Sun still paled in comparison to the whole page spread taken up by a beautiful, topless, 21 year old woman.

Now, we have nothing against breasts. Breasts are fantastic. Many of the undersigned on this letter have a pair themselves. But there is a time and a place for them, and a newspaper is not it. Having the primary image of a woman as one showing her bare breasts in a self-professed 'family newspaper' conveys the message that a woman’s primary purpose is to be sexually available. This limits women’s potential to base their worth on how sexually attractive she is is perceieved to be by society - this is inherently misogynistic, and we shouldn’t stand for it. Indeed, as well as sexist, we believe Page 3 to be inherently racist too. In 43 years of its existence, only 5 non-white women have been featured as models. This promotes the 'othering' of black people and people of other non-white ethnic backgrounds. Every facet of our university should be striving for progress, and yes, that includes our supermarkets.

Costcutter boycotting The Sun would send a powerful message that Page 3 is unacceptable – it sends the message that as a university we value our women students, and that you as a supermarket value your women customers to be more than sexual objects.

Please stop stocking The Sun (and The Star while you’re at it) until the bare breasts have been removed from their pages.
