Sandra Genis started this petition to Costa Mesa City Council

In 2016, Costa Mesa voters overwhelmingly approved Measure Y, “An Initiative to Require Voter Approval on Certain Development Projects”.  Under Measure Y, major developments which change existing zoning and planning programs would not only have to be approved by the City Council, but by Costa Mesa voters as well.

One Metro West includes 1,057 apartments in a 98-foot-tall building at eighty (80!) units an acre.  There would also be a small amount of retail and office uses.  One Metro is located at the end of Sunflower Avenue, between SOCO and the Santa Ana River, just across from the “State Street” homes south of the river.

The area surrounding the site is now mostly used by low-rise industrial and research and development.  The project would be a huge departure from anything in the nearby area and would require a general plan amendment and zoning amendment.  It could set a precedent for conversion of a quality office/industrial park area into high density residential uses with impacts citywide.

Measure Y is designed to address this type of radical change.   Measure Y is designed to let the people of Costa Mesa decide what we want for the future of our community.

But some on the City Council are looking for loopholes to weasel out of the election requirement.  City Council must not try to jam this enormous project through without a vote of the people!  The City Council must not ignore the will of the people!

In addition to signing the petition, you can write to the Council directly at citycouncil@costamesaca.gov and cc the city clerk at cityclerk@costamesaca.gov.
