Why this petition matters

Started by kelly wilson

VAT or Value added tax in the 21st century traditionally stood at 17.5% however, due to the 2008 recession the then Labour chancellor cut VAT to 15%. The Tories denied rumours they would raise VAT should they gain power but they did and then some by adding a  whole 5% making it the highest in British history  making VAT 20%
In 1974 under Labour VAT was cut to 8% to support struggling households. Serious cuts need to happen again.

VAT should also be cut completely from fuel duty as according to the RAC, almost half of the cost of petrol is tax: 30 per cent is made up by fuel duty, while another 17 per cent is VAT. In theory Rishi Sunak could eliminate all fuel taxes and cut VAT for fuel and the cost of petrol would immediately be cut in half. With the cost of filling an average car now almost £100, this on top of the cost of living crisis is simply unsustainable for most people and could impact the tourist sector as people choose to not visit attractions instead choosing to stay close to home.

We therefore call on the government to cut VAT from fuel and reduce VAT on other items.

The cost of living is impacting everyone, however lower and middle income households are finding the increases unsustainable. Please sign the petition to ask the government to step up and do something.
