Petition Grain Valley School District Board To Place MCC In-District Issue on Ballot

I recently enrolled my daughter in classes at Metropolitan Community College (MCC). When researching tuition, etc., I was surprised to learn that the Grain Valley School District is not in-district in their system. Blue Springs, Independence, and Fort Osage are all in-district and enjoy almost 50% lower tuition rates as a result. For a full-time student (12 hours), Grain Valley students pay $2,196 while students just a few miles away pay $1,236 for the same 12 hours of credit.
With one child taking classes at MCC and a 6th grader who will be a college student sooner than I'd like to admit, I have a very personal reason for seeing Grain Valley become an in-district community. But, I'd also like to see all Grain Valley students able to access affordable tuition at the community college.
I have spoken with Mayor Todd and School Board and City Councilman Jeff Coleman who were both very helpful in providing background on this issue. Apparently, the school district must put the issue on the ballot but have hesitated to do so as they feared it would be seen as an additional tax from the school district. However, if there was enough interest from citizens, the board may be convinced to place the issue on the ballot.
I'm putting this out here because I'm hopeful there are other Grain Valley residents who see the value in our district becoming in-district with MCC. Beyond the obvious financial benefits to those attending MCC, I believe Grain Valley becoming in-district w/ MCC would further illustrate our community's commitment to education.
If you are interested in showing your support to request the school district place this issue on the ballot, I would love to hear from you.
