Zinabu Engstrom started this petition to Senator Cory Gardner and

I believe we should amend the Constitution so that people born outside of the United States, who are United States citizens, can become President or Vice President. The reason that U.S. citizens born outside the country should have the opportunity to become President is in part because, there is a significant amount of people who are U.S. citizens who have the inability to lead the country, by means of the two most prominent political positions. This is devastating because it is limiting the potential of this nation. Those people who don't legally have the right to become President and VP aren't able to share and or implement those ideas and methods on a large scale. In addition, what this country as a whole loses is a more diverse amount of perpectives and people. Another benefit that can come from allowing people born outside the U.S., who are citizens, to become President and Vice President, is the chance for more voter turnout. The amending of this clause could lead to more voter turnout, because it could bring different people in the nation within the fold, and it could revitalize two positions that have during many periods become devalued and stale. Also, individually, this can be a somber truth for younger kids and adults alike who have aspirations to change the country on a big stage, through both there words and actions, but are being limited because of a clause that is both outdated and illogical.

Keeping this clause means that the U.S. is devalueing the impact and leadership skills that can come from a considerable portion of the country. In addition, claims that being born in the U.S. gives you a better grasp of situations going on within the nation, or that it makes you more fit in general to be leading, is inacurate. This is wrong on multiple levels because, for one, people born outside the U.S. can pottentially have the opportunities to become more knowledgeable on U.S affairs, and how certain actions could positively and negatively affect the U.S. Secondly, there are numerous people who are U.S. citizens and were born here that don't have a clue on what's really going on in the coutry. When it comes to fit, there can be no doubt that there will be some people who wouldn't fit as a Vice President or Presidient of the United States, but looking back at our past Presidents and VP's, there were numerous ones who didn't fit being in office. When it comes to people worrying about foreign infiltration, because of not being born in the U.S., can again be applied to our past and present office holders.

This also is odd because people born outside the U.S. make up a considerable portion of the country, which helps define this nation. A nation that has become one that represents people from all across the globe. Why, then, should a nation like ours, continue to limit a large amount of people from having the opportunity to achieve great things, and potentially have a huge impact on the nation.
