Samuel Garrison started this petition to Senator Cory A. Booker

The injustices that African Americans have faced are further compounded by ongoing ignorance and lies.  It is incredulous that, America, the leader of the free world, has continued to glorify and romanticize the history of slavery in the United States.  We will not be able to heal as a nation as long as we continue to deny the brutality of slavery and the permanent cracks it created in the founding of this country.   America, we are not whole! The truth is we are a fraction, 3/5ths to be precise.  This nation has and continue to define itself in terms of a compromise to truth instead of the truth itself.  Our consciences now bear witness to the fact that African Americans are not being treated as human beings but mere statistics, numbers or fractions.  To this day, many Americans still believe that the plight of Black America was caused by laziness and drugs instead of slavery and institutional racism.  The lies that have produced this belief, and have enabled it to persist and grow, must come to an end! It is time that America fully embraces the truth.  This petition signifies such an embrace as it would require our head of state to make a yearly apology to African Americans for the deleterious effects of slavery.
