Town Park Basketball Court Renovation

The basketball court at Town Park in Corte Madera easily could become the site that brings athletes and families together from all across Southern Marin. High quality outdoor courts are very scarce in the county, and a relatively cheap renovation would reward Corte Madera for decades to come. Outdoor basketball courts are key to ensure that players of all income levels have access to play.

A renovation of the court would include re-leveling and resurfacing to make it flat and give the ball a predictable bounce. Concrete is the cheapest option, but other composite surfaces are available and bring the court to an even higher standard. New hoops with clear hard-plastic backboards and nets are essential. A few simple stands or benches would allow waiting players or onlookers to sit beside the court. Lights to allow for evening games would be an amazing addition, but are secondary to the re-leveling and hoop replacement. While a simple classic court would suffice, the court also has the potential to incorporate artistic images in its center court of Mt. Tam or Redwood trees to reflect the town's history and scenery.

The new court will encourage Mariners young and old to exercise and practice a sport that so many in the area love. Pick-up basketball is a cheap, interactive, and timeless hobby that is coveted by fans of the sport. It brings together friends and families and encourages people to meet others in the community. Town Park currently draws a great crowd of soccer players each week on its fields, and, with a little help, it will certainly have a regular and formidable basketball culture. Town Park is an ideal site because of its accessibility from the freeway, parking, and nearby bathroom and water facilities.

The weekly pickup games and casual solo players will bring new costumers to the cafes, restaurants, markets, and gas stations that line Tamalpais Drive. Over the course of a few years, the town could recover the cost of the renovation in the form of greater sales tax revenue from increased business at local stores and restaurants.
