Corrections Corporation of America is attempting to buyout state prisons with a catch- the prisons must remain 90% full. It would seem ludicrous that states will be REQUIRED to keep people locked up, and without even needing to go into detail we all can imagine what this will result in. More taxpayer money wasted on housing prisoners (averaging about $30,000 per year), more citizens with less prospects because of criminal records (leading to higher rates of recidivism), and state legislators who are forced to enact more ridiculous laws or implement harsher penalties in order to retain prisoners or "recruit" new ones (will most likely focus on non-violent offenses). This type of corporate control is neither desired nor required by the American public, we have enough people in prison as it is (highest per- capita on earth).
