"In the run-up to Singapore’s 56th birthday, let's embrace the true Singaporean identity of Inclusion!"

Perceptions and attitudes towards Persons with Disabilities not only hinders their quality of life but the people around them. Social exclusion still exists - 64% of people in Singapore were willing to share public spaces with PwDs but not willing to interact with them. The lack of interaction and understanding between PwDs and the general population is a huge contributing factor. Among a range of concerns, many are underprepared for work and life as adults. As many as 100,000 people in Singapore live with some form of disabilities.

  • According to the Ministry of Social and Family Development, 2018 - approximately 3% of the resident population has some form of disabilities.
  • Persons with sensory (hearing or visual impairments) and physical disabilities would constitute half of the disability group. The remainder comprises those with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder.
  • Persons with disabilities make up just 0.55% of the resident labour force or 12,000 out of 2.26 million in 2016. 4,000 children were diagnosed with special developmental needs every year in 2015 and this number is likely to go up. (ref)
  • According to “Inclusive Attitudes Survey” by Lien Foundation in 2016 - 64% of people in Singapore were willing to share public spaces with PwDs but not willing to interact with them.
  • More than a third of Singaporeans have no special needs children in their social circles. And 23% of the remaining two thirds only meet more than once a year. (ref)
  • Public buses were only made fully accessible in 2008 and they have largely been an unseen community to the majority of the public, with lack of personal interactions and friendships fueling misconceptions about the PwD community. (ref)
  • Exclusion and discrimination from them having relationships, married life and parenthood for many PwDs for a variety of societal misconceptions. (ref)
